Is Anger Genetic or Learned? Understanding Family Influence on Anger Issues

Is Anger genetic or learned? Anger is a natural feeling, but it means that maybe something is bothering you. It is the trigger to an aggressive stance. With the feeling of anger confronting one now and again, there might arise instances where there is no obvious cause.

Anger due to genetic?

Is anger embedded in our genes? Anger can be almost seen, as it were, to be in our blood. As with bipolar disorder or depression, these genes play an important part in how we express our distress. Because of this, some people suffer such heavy depression that they feel helpless to do anything what they want to do. Consequently, these people often manifest their depressed feelings through angry responses directed to someone else.

For Example:

In today’s world, we can see that Generation Z often experiences intense depression due to relationship issues. They tend to keep their hidden thoughts to themselves rather than sharing them with others. Instead, they express their emotions through aggression and anger.

After taking a history from a 20-year-old patient who visited me. I found that she liked a boy, and he betrayed her. This sent her into deep depression, causing her to eat very little and to get extremely irritable over the very minor issues. However, she never talked to anyone, and this suppression slowly turned into anger.

In cases of bipolar disorder, anger commonly runs in families. In the manic phase, extreme hyperactivities are present, and the pattern tends to be inherited down generations.

Is Anger learned?

When we say that anger is learned, we are not wrong. We are now much involved not only by genes but also by the environment with which a person will come to know and affect a person’s behavior. The old saying in Urdu says, “Jaisi bethak, waisi sohbat,” meaning really deep effect in personality for the company one keeps. Thus, the impact of environment and personal experience on the behavior of that individual is immensely of distinct value. A person’s interaction with a society they will spend more time with and who they get associated with will seemingly determine how they behave.

Someone spends time with highly aggressive individuals or often watches TV shows. That portray an angry hero as dominant in a highly aggressive and agitated manner. Thus, they will be more likely to replicate the same high levels of behavior. Even though we cannot completely eradicate anger, it is possible to learn how to control it using some techniques.
